General

This website is not a commercial website. The author created these pages for his pleasure, to share his passion.
Everywhere where possible, some further background information is given as well as some historical data about the buildings you can find here. This will make you understand a little better, why they are in the state we can see them today : centuries have passed by, repairs, and restaurations were necessary and "modernisations" have been done.

Information about the photos

All the photos have been taken with a digital SLR camera : Sigma SD 10, with three standard Zooms (18-55 mm, 50-200 mm, and 28-300 mm). If you are interested to obtain further technical information please contact the webmaster.
The main part of the photos have been taken "in a hurry" during a trip to the town and very often there was not very much time. Some buildings have been visited several times. Many pictures have been taken under very poor light conditions, with a very high sensibility. A flash has been used for some inside photos.

About this website

This website shows some (religious) gothic buildings, mostly in France, country of the origin of this style of architecture. Some other buildings outside of France are shown too, in order to show how this style was adopted (and adapted) elsewhere.
The author tried to show for each building a floor plan, which will be helpful to find out which parts of the building have been taken. The drawings have been modified to adapt them to the need of the website.
Nearly all of these drawings are from the Dictionnaire raisonné de l'architecture française du XIe au XVIe siècle author: Viollet-le-Duc, which is partly published in english or in french found at the Free Encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Like all websites, this one shall be updated too. Further buildings will be shown and more information given, as soon as possible; such as the St Maurice's cathedral in Angers or the cathedral of St Peter & St Paul in Nantes. Further on, the existing albums will be completed, if the necessary time will be available, e. g. the abbey church St Remi, where no inside view has been taken for the moment, or the cathedral Notre-Dame in Chartres, where the architectural details inside, have been completely neglected.
Further projects exist for the next years... Not only well known buildings shall be shown, but also some smaller ones, outside of the classical trips, which are sometimes very interesting and which are worth a detour.
But for all this, a lot of time is necessary.... and to elaborate the album of one building, sometimes several weeks are necessary. Please be patient.

About the Author

The author of this website was always interested in the medivial architecture, especially in the gothic. During his numerous travels around Europe he had the possibility to see a lot of them, (those built between the 12th to the 15th century, as well of those of the 19th century); so he is able to make some comparisons between them.
Fluent in german, english and french, he is also able to speak russian. That is why he decided to write this website in those four languages, in order to permit to more people around the world to have an easy access to this collection.
